The ideal holiday destination has two key factors, an interesting location with plenty to see & do, and somewhere beautiful to go back to after exploring... Sophia Luxury Suites in Santorini, Greece, definitely has both.
I came across Aynhoe Park while I was browsing wedding venues and fell a bit in love with its ultra quirky interior. The atmosphere is luxurious, glamorous and a little bit mad! Beautiful, deeply saturated colours and plush fabrics are mixed with a menagerie of art, modern sculptures, real & faux taxidermy and other intriguing curiosities.
So it's been longer than I expected, and my life is somewhat different than before... In short, I left my job & moved to south Wales to live with my boyfriend, got engaged on the same day, found a new job in Cardiff and have now started the process of moving to London!
Making the most of the sunshine & doing some fossil hunting along the South Wales coastline. |
So i've been away for a bit longer than i'd intended to, a bit of a hiatus of sorts, mostly due to starting a new job with pretty erratic hours. Unfortunately it's not a design job, but it's money, which will eventually (hopefully) lead to a better location and better opportunities for my career.
It's taken a good month or so for my body to get used to the extra activity, long days, late nights and speedily consumed junk food during my short breaks!
Hopefully I'll be back to posting again soon now peak season is over and I have more spare time to fill besides worrying about sleeping and eating!

Gardens can be a difficult spaces to design, decorate or even use. Here in the UK we're lucky if we get a couple of weeks each year when they weather is nice enough to make the most of being outside. I don't know about anyone else, but ours definitely gets a bit neglected over the colder months, so by the time summer does come around it's not the most appealing place to enjoy the sun; it's hard to imagine you're relax when you're sat next to the recycling or the rusty barbecue!
One way to quickly make a massive difference to any space is by changing the lighting, and this rule can apply to the outside too. Even if you rarely sit out in the evening, having a garden with subtle lighting illuminating pathways, creating intriguing shapes and shadows from plants or even making a cosy bistro patio area might encourage you to do so... and if not, you'll have something to gaze out on while enjoying being inside!
First off, I have to admit that totally white interiors scare me. I'm the sort of person who can't wear white clothes without spilling something on myself within a matter of minutes, so the thought of having a house that has the potential to show every speck of dust and dirt is insane. Having white interiors is really a way of life more than a design choice; replacing wood or coloured furniture with paler alternatives, placing day to day clutter out of sight, being more selective on decorative items bought and displayed, and of course, being more thorough with cleaning!
That said, the pay off is often something beautiful. Natural light reflects so much better, and it creates a soothing, blank canvas to live in.

One quick way to add a sense of life and movement into any room is by adding a couple of plants. As well as adding an extra flash of colour, plants can help purify the air inside your home or just add a natural fragrance. As someone with a family of hay fever suffers, flowers and bouquets often trigger sneezing fits, so finding bloom-less foliage are a great alternative that also require a lot less effort and cost. While even the best kept flowers might only last a week or two, with fresh water daily and regular stem trims and constantly picking up the dead buds, choosing the right plant means all you have to do is remember to give it the occasional water!
Some of the best house plants include; aloe vera, spider plants, snake plants, golden pothos, english ivy, bamboo & bamboo palm, rubber trees & peace lilies. If you're really not much of a green thumb, then there are some brilliant faux plants around that create the illusion without the hassle. Abigail Ahern stocks some incredibly convincing fake flowers and plants that will convince even the keenest gardener.
The best way to use plants to create a real impact is pop them in unexpected place; large trees and shrubs inside will always catch your eye and varying sizes add extra texture and depth into even the plainest corners. These images all have fairly plain, undecorated interiors, but by adding a selection of lush green foliage the unpolished elements all tie together in a natural way, and create a calming environment. My particular favourite is the office/desk area in image 4; the natural materials next to the polish of the glass table top and metallic plant pot make it seem like an inspiring place to get work done.
I found this wonderful example of monochrome interior design at Concept By Anna, an interior stylist and photographer with an amazing sense of style. These images create such a strong impact though the use of black and white to make a space feel so light and calming.
The use of linen sheets over the sofa are an easy and affordable way to makeover a space if your existing furniture doesn't fit your scheme, and cushion instantly make a room feel more homely. The combination of the patterned cushions and personal items and artwork on the shelves behind compel your eyes around the room, making you want to take in all the details!
I'd really recommend taking a look at Anna's blog; as well as her online shop Pure Love, which sells everything from artwork to shoes, to see more beautiful images with a minimal Scandinavian style.

Copper accents aren't exactly a new design trend, it made a massive impact in 2013, but is still as popular a year later. Copper, or even rose gold, makes such a brilliant alternative to brass, yellow gold, or steel as it creates such a unique array of colours when it wears slightly, or when light reflects off polished, smooth surfaces. The internal shades of pinks, oranges and greens add a depth that many household metallics just don't have.
These two images show copper being used in pretty unusual ways; a kitchen and a staircase. I imagine these would be pretty expensive to get custom made, however they both create quite a statement.
For the past month of so, Hillarys Blinds have been running a competition featuring four of their newest fabric designs. The brief itself was pretty basic, make something using a 100x100cm piece of fabric, blog about it, and have the chance to win £1000. I figured it wouldn't hurt to give it a go!
Out of the four patterns available I preferred the "Blue Teal Parade" and "Patina Pewter", and after some deliberation decided to go for the more colourful and feminine peacock print to take me out of my monochrome comfort zone.
I used my fabric to create a fabric covered memo/note board for my room as somewhere to tuck away all my lose tickets and bits & pieces while adding a bit of decoration to my still unpainted walls.
